Today you plan your full essay using the BOXES-AND-BULLETS planner (Lucy Calkins' tool). Big box at top = THESIS-CLAIM. Three medium boxes below = REASON 1, REASON 2, REASON 3. Under each reason: 2-3 bullets of EVIDENCE you can use (a fact, a quote, a story, a statistic, an example). Small box at the bottom = SO-WHAT/LINK-BACK for your conclusion. This planner is your MAP — you write the essay from it. The CREEL paragraph in lesson 3 fills one of these reason-boxes; today we map all three. Watch teacher fill in the winter-recess planner with three reasons (focus, fresh air, morale) and 2-3 evidence bullets each. The PLANNER comes BEFORE the draft — Calkins is firm on this. Drafting without a planner is hard. Drafting WITH a planner is just transcription with elaboration.

  • Notice each reason has 2-3 evidence types — a mix of fact, quote, and example. This is the variety the 8-criterion rubric will reward.

The boxes-and-bullets planner is the Calkins method's structural backbone for persuasive essays. Children who plan write; children who don't plan flail. Watch for planners with only 1 evidence bullet per reason — push for 2-3. The Martin's Big Words mentor text models how a real persuader (Dr. King) organizes reason-and-evidence around a claim. Refer back across the term. The planner becomes the daily artifact for status-of-class — child shows planner first, then drafts.
