Compose and decompose numbers within 5 using number bonds (warm-up tier)
Break any whole number from 2 to 5 into two parts in more than one way; combine two parts to make a whole within 5. Represent each decomposition as a number bond (whole on top, two parts below in connected circles) and (with teacher scribing) as an equation (e.g., 5 = 4 + 1). Foundation for K.OA.A.3 decomposition skill that scales to 10.

Prereqs
Common misconceptions
- Names only one decomposition of a number and stops, not realizing multiple decompositions exist (e.g., says '5 is 2 and 3' but cannot offer '5 is 1 and 4').
- Counts BOTH parts AND the whole when checking the bond — triple-counting the same units.
- Reverses the position of whole and part on the bond diagram (writes whole in a part circle).
- Reports the larger of two parts as 'the whole' rather than the actual whole.
