Compose and decompose numbers within 10 using number bonds (K.OA.A.3)

Decompose any whole number from 2 to 10 into two parts in more than one way; compose two parts to make a whole within 10. Record each decomposition as a number bond and as an equation. For 10 specifically, find ALL six commutatively-distinct pairs: (0,10), (1,9), (2,8), (3,7), (4,6), (5,5). Special focus on 'partners of 10' (CCSS K.OA.A.4 'for any number 1-9, find the number that makes 10').

Common misconceptions
  • Says '10 is 5 and 5' but cannot generate any other decomposition; treats '5 and 5' as THE decomposition of 10.
  • Counts the same counter twice when shaking-spilling — loses one-to-one in the moment of recording.
  • Treats (3, 7) and (7, 3) as different decompositions structurally rather than commutative variants of the same partition (worth noting that at K we ACCEPT both as valid responses; this is not a misconception until G1).
  • Says 10 = 6 + 5 (off by one because of counting error) and does not check by recounting.
  • Cannot produce the 'partner of' a given number 1-9 (asked 'what makes 10 with 3?', child says '10' or '3' rather than '7').
