math.gK.f.ns.subitize
Subitize quantities 1-5 (perceptual) and 6-10 (conceptual)
Instantly recognize small quantities (1-5) without counting (perceptual subitizing). Recognize larger quantities (6-10) by seeing smaller groups (conceptual subitizing — see 7 as a 5-and-2 ten-frame). Dot arrangements include dice patterns, ten-frame arrangements, finger configurations, and scattered patterns.

Successors
- Cardinality — the last number said names the total count (CCSS K.CC.B.4)

Common misconceptions
- Counts one-by-one instead of subitizing when arrangement is canonical (dice-5) — the subitizing skill not yet established.
- Cannot subitize beyond 4 in any arrangement (perceptual ceiling without conceptual scaffolding).
- Says quantity matches arrangement-rotation (sees a rotated dice-5 as 'different' from upright dice-5).
