Grade 4 Spring — Research Report Writing, Source Evaluation, Figurative Language Deepening, and Formal/Informal Register

Embed source material in writing using in-text citation with signal phrases

Use 5 signal-phrase patterns (MG-5) to attribute every fact, quote, statistic, or example to its source: 'According to ___,' / 'In her book ___, ___ writes that ___' / '___ explains that ___' / '___ notes that ___' / '___ describes ___ as ___'. Vary signal phrases within a report — do not repeat the same phrase paragraph after paragraph. Combine with L.4.2.b mechanics for direct quotations (quotation marks, comma after attribution, capital first word, period inside closing mark).

  • Includes a fact without ANY signal phrase (the fact appears to be the writer's own — plagiarism).
  • Uses 'According to ___,' as the only pattern in every paragraph (lack of signal-phrase variety).
