Grade 4 Spring — Research Report Writing, Source Evaluation, Figurative Language Deepening, and Formal/Informal Register
English · GR G4 eng.g4.s.gr.punctuation_for_effect

Choose punctuation for effect (L.4.3.b): colon, dash, exclamation point, question mark

Use punctuation as a craft choice with specific effects (MG-17). COLON ( : ) introduces a list or an explanation. DASH ( — ) interrupts for emphasis or adds an aside. EXCLAMATION POINT ( ! ) emphasizes urgency or strong feeling (used sparingly in formal writing). QUESTION MARK ( ? ) invites the reader to wonder (can open a hook or a section transition). Apply at least one purposeful punctuation choice per research report (hook or evidence panel caption).

Common misconceptions
  • Overuses exclamation points in formal writing (every sentence ends in !) — defeats the emphasis effect.
  • Confuses colon (introduces) with semicolon (joins independents) — semicolon is a G5 entry standard, but the confusion already appears at G4.
