Children review MG-19 Showcase planning poster. Teacher displays 3 sample evidence panel formats.

Teacher moves
  • Show 3 panel types: chart, quoted source, photo with caption
  • Name pros/cons of each

Today you publish. The PUBLICATION BOOKLET has: COVER (title + author + topic-illustration), INTERIOR (5-7 paragraph essay with works-cited list), EVIDENCE PANEL (a single-page visual), AUTHOR BIO (3-4 sentences about you as a researcher), BACK COVER (3-stars-1-wish self-reflection). The EVIDENCE PANEL is your visual. Pick ONE format: (a) CHART — a bar chart, timeline, or simple data display; (b) PHOTO WITH CAPTION — a printed image with 1-2 sentence caption + source attribution; (c) QUOTED SOURCE — a key quote enlarged with author + source; (d) CATEGORY MAP — a visual map of your 3-5 categories. Watch teacher design a sample category-map evidence panel for the Sojourner Truth topic.

Key examples
  • Notice the evidence panel SUMMARIZES the research visually. The Showcase visitor can see the structure at a glance.
model Center: 'Sojourner Truth' name + dates 1797-1883. 3 branches: EARLY LIFE (with 3 details: born NY, sold 4x, Dutch first language), SPEECHES (with 3 details: 1843 name change, 1851 Akron, abolition advocacy), LEGACY (with 3 details: stamp, statue, continued influence). Each branch color-coded. Bottom: 'Sources: McKissack 1992, Painter 1996, Pinkney 2010.'

Differentiation

Scaffolds
  • Pre-printed booklet templates with section labels; child fills
  • Adult-mediated transcription for fine-motor needs
  • Evidence panel can be drawing-only (no caption required day 20)
Extensions
  • Add a TIMELINE evidence panel alongside the primary panel.
  • Add a glossary of Tier-3 vocabulary as additional booklet page.
  • Type the booklet interior if keyboarding-ready.
English Learners
  • Bilingual cover (title in both languages)
  • Bilingual caption on evidence panel
  • Adult-mediated transcription
Ieps 504s
  • Pre-typed booklet interior; child only adds cover art and panel sketch
  • Adult scribe for caption
  • Reduced target: cover + 2 interior paragraphs

Teacher notes

Publication is the most motivating phase — children invest visibly when they see the booklet emerging. Watch for two issues: (1) booklet contents skip the works-cited list (it's at the back so easy to forget — must be present); (2) evidence panel skips source attribution on photos or quotes — push for full attribution. Encourage typing for those at keyboarding-readiness; cursive and print remain valid choices. The category-map evidence panel format is especially well-suited to research mode.
