Identify what a family keeps from their place of origin AND what they adopt in a new place
Distinguish CULTURAL RETENTION (what families keep: language, recipes, holidays, songs, names, religion, objects, gestures) from CULTURAL ADAPTATION (what families adopt: new language, new foods, new friends, new sports). Recognize that BOTH happen together - families keep AND become. Use MG-9 to fill in a KEEP/ADOPT/BOTH card for one family.

Common misconceptions
- Believing families must CHOOSE between keep and adopt (they do BOTH at once)
- Believing cultural retention is 'old-fashioned' (it is identity)
- Believing cultural adaptation is 'losing' the original culture (it is layering, not losing)
