Grade 8 Fall — Multi-Source Synthesis, Formal Academic Style, and the Verbals/Voice/Mood Suite
English · GR G8 eng.g8.f.gr.five_verb_moods

Identify and form verbs in the indicative, imperative, interrogative, conditional, and subjunctive moods (CCSS L.8.1.c)

Recognize all five verb moods in mentor sentences. Form each mood accurately, with special attention to the subjunctive (contrary-to-fact 'were'; base-form verb after demand/recommendation triggers). Use the conditional and subjunctive purposively in argumentative writing (L.8.3.a applied).

Common misconceptions
  • Uses 'was' instead of 'were' in contrary-to-fact 'if' clauses ('If I was the writer' — incorrect; should be 'If I were the writer').
  • Inflects the verb in demand/recommendation 'that' clauses ('It is essential that the source IS credible' — incorrect; should be 'BE credible').
  • Confuses second conditional (hypothetical-present, uses 'would') with third conditional (counterfactual-past, uses 'would have').
