Recognize and use similes and metaphors (L.4.5.a)

Identify similes (X is LIKE Y; X is AS [adj] AS Y) and metaphors (X IS Y, no like/as) in mentor texts. Produce original similes and metaphors as PERSUASIVE moves — comparisons chosen to AMPLIFY a claim or vivify an evidence panel. Apply in introductions (hooks) and conclusions (so-what closings).

Common misconceptions
  • Writes a comparison that doesn't actually share a property ('The classroom was like a banana' — what property?).
  • Calls every figurative expression a metaphor; misses the simile / metaphor distinction (like/as vs. is).
