Order adjectives within a sentence using the OPSHACOMP pattern (L.4.1.d)

Order multiple adjectives in a noun phrase using the conventional English pattern: OPINION → SIZE → AGE → SHAPE → COLOR → ORIGIN → MATERIAL → PURPOSE (OPSHACOMP). Apply this to vivid descriptive evidence in persuasive writing. Notice when reversing the order sounds odd to a native ear, and use the pattern as a craft tool for clarity.

Common misconceptions
  • Places COLOR before SIZE ('a red big ball' instead of 'a big red ball').
  • Stacks too many adjectives (5+) and produces a clunky noun phrase, missing that 2-3 adjectives is the readable max.
