English ยท GR G3 eng.g3.s.gr.sentence_variety_purposeful

Use simple, compound, and complex sentences purposefully for emphasis, contrast, and pacing (L.3.1.i)

Apply sentence-variety as a craft decision, not a decoration. Use a SHORT SIMPLE sentence for EMPHASIS (an important fact, a striking number, a closing thought). Use a COMPOUND sentence for PARALLEL FACTS (joining two related observations with FANBOYS). Use a COMPLEX sentence for NUANCE (adding cause, time, contrast, or condition). Produce at least one of each type in a 4-paragraph informational essay.

Common misconceptions
  • Writes every sentence in one style (all simple sentences = choppy; all complex sentences = sluggish).
  • Adds variety by making sentences longer instead of varying short/medium/long with purpose.
