Lesson plan

Warm-up

3 min

Air-write all magic-c lowercase (c, a, o, d, g, q) reviewed so far.

Teacher moves
  • Quick pace

Direct instruction

10 min

Now we meet DIVER letters — they start at the sky-line and DIVE down. Lowercase l is one tall dive from sky to dirt — easy! Lowercase i is a short dive from grass to dirt — plus a tiny dot above. Lowercase t is a tall dive from sky to dirt — plus a small line across at the grass-line.

Key examples
  • Easiest letter — straight line.
model One tall vertical from sky to dirt.
    prompt Form l.
  • Don't forget the dot — i without a dot looks like an 'l' shrunk.
model Short vertical from grass to dirt, then dot ABOVE in the sky-zone.
    prompt Form i.
  • The cross goes at the grass-line, not the sky-line.
model Tall vertical from sky to dirt, then cross line at the grass-line.
    prompt Form t.
Checks for understanding
  • Where does the dot on i go? (sky-zone, above grass-line)
  • Where does the cross on t go? (at the grass-line)
  • Which letter is tallest: l, i, or t? (l and t both touch sky-line)
Media
M-K-S-GR-03-A Animation Physical / non-image

20-second animation. Lowercase l, i, t formed in sequence on three-line paper. For each, the 'dive' is emphasized as a downward arrow from sky-zone. i's dot is added with a small bouncing animation. t's cross is added at grass-line. Pacing: 7 seconds per letter.

Guided practice

Teacher notes

The 'diver' metaphor accelerates lowercase formation by giving children a verbal mental model. Children who don't internalize the metaphor often start lowercase letters in random places. If you notice this, return to the metaphor explicitly.
