Lesson plan
Warm-up
5 minChildren re-read their poem aloud to themselves. Note 1 line to polish.
- Silent reading time
- Affirm specific noticings
Direct instruction
13 minToday you POLISH your poem AND DESIGN your publication booklet. POEM POLISH: re-read aloud. Listen for: (1) does my figurative move land? (2) does my sensory image feel concrete? (3) are my line breaks creating the pause I want? (4) does my word choice match my named tone? Adjust 2-3 lines. Don't over-polish — poems can be over-revised into deadness. PUBLICATION BOOKLET: from MG-25. The booklet has 5 parts. PART 1 — COVER: title (your literary-essay title — should name the text and a hint of your insight), your name, the mentor-text author below; date. Color-design. PART 2 — LITERARY ESSAY INTERIOR: 4-6 paragraphs (intro + body 1-3 + conclusion), typed, with embedded quotations and parenthetical citations. PART 3 — WORKS-CITED PAGE: alphabetized list. PART 4 — EVIDENCE PANEL: mentor-text cover image + 1 key quotation from the text + your voice-fingerprint card for the author. PART 5 — COMPANION POEM: your original poem displayed with figurative move underlined and tone named below. Watch teacher show a sample booklet (from prior year, with names removed).
-
Notice: 5 parts integrate the term's work — literary essay, poetry, evidence, voice. The Showcase visitor sees them together.model Cover: 'Resilience as Adaptation: A Literary Essay on Pam Munoz Ryan's Esperanza Rising' / Interior: 5-paragraph essay typed / Works-Cited: Ryan + 1 secondary / Evidence Panel: book cover + lullaby quote + voice-fingerprint / Poem: 'Quiet Kitchen Morning' with personification underlined.prompt Teacher shows sample publication booklet with all 5 parts.
- Name the 5 parts of the publication booklet.
- Why does the booklet include both the literary essay AND the poem?
- What goes on the evidence panel?

Teacher notes
Publication booklet design is the integrative artifact of the term — it pulls together literary essay, poetry, voice work, and citation. Push for SPECIFIC design choices (color matching tone; fonts matching voice). Watch for: (1) booklets that look generic; (2) booklets that lose works-cited or evidence panel. The 5 parts are non-negotiable.
