Directly compare two objects by length (K.MD.A.1, K.MD.A.2)

Describe measurable attributes of objects (length, height); directly compare two objects by length by aligning them at a common baseline (both start at the table edge) and identifying which is longer/shorter/same length. Vocabulary: longer than, shorter than, same length as, taller than, the shortest, the longest. Use linking cubes (informal non-standard unit) at stretch tier to quantify.

Common misconceptions
  • Compares lengths without aligning at a common baseline (object A starts at the table edge, object B starts in the middle of the table — child judges by which 'sticks out' farther on the right without checking left ends).
  • Says the longer object is the one that 'looks bigger' when objects are vertical vs horizontal (perceptual error — same length but rotated).
  • Confuses length with weight ('this one is longer because it's heavier').
  • When measuring with cubes, leaves gaps between cubes or overlaps cubes.
