Classify objects into categories and count the number of objects in each category (K.MD.B.3)

Sort a small collection (up to 10 objects) into 2 or 3 given categories based on a single attribute (color, shape, size, type), then count the number of objects in each category. Record the category counts on a tally chart or pictograph. Compare category counts: which category has more? Which has the most/fewest? This is the seed of categorical data and the first taste of statistical work.

Common misconceptions
  • Sorts by an unintended attribute (asked to sort by color, sorts by size).
  • Double-counts an object that fits multiple categories when categories overlap (the K-version uses non-overlapping single-attribute categories to avoid this).
  • Reports total objects when asked for category counts (gives 10 instead of 4-3-3).
  • Cannot identify the category with the most without recounting (does not compare counts mentally).
  • Confuses 'how many in each' with 'how many in all.'
