Read and use a map's title, compass rose, scale bar, and legend
Identify the 4 essential map elements on the local town map: TITLE / COMPASS ROSE / SCALE BAR / LEGEND. Use the scale bar to measure approximate real-world distance between two local features. Use the legend to interpret 5-8 symbols. Distinguish ABSOLUTE LOCATION (a specific point with compass + scale) from RELATIVE LOCATION (in relation to nearby features).

Prereqs
-
hist.g2.s.geo.world_map_class_origins
(not yet loaded)
- Name and use the four cardinal directions (N, S, E, W) with North = up
- Understand that a map is a small picture that stands for a real place
Common misconceptions
- Skipping the scale bar (without scale, distance on a map is meaningless)
- Confusing absolute and relative location (absolute = specific point; relative = in relation to)
- Forgetting that North is conventionally up (map conventions matter)
