Evaluate sources with the CRAAP test (Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, Purpose) (CCSS W.7.8)

Apply the 5-criterion CRAAP test to print and digital sources. For each source identify: WHEN it was published (Currency), whether it addresses the research question (Relevance), who the author is and their credentials (Authority), whether other sources corroborate (Accuracy), and what the motive is (Purpose). Reach a use/use-with-caveat/reject decision and document it on the source-evaluation worksheet.

Common misconceptions
  • Treats all 5 criteria as independent — actually they interact (a source with high Authority but high Purpose-bias needs caveat).
  • Equates 'looks professional' with 'is credible' — sponsored content can look polished while serving an agenda.
