Grade 6 Fall — Argumentative Writing, Claim-Evidence-Warrant (Toulmin Lite), Counterclaim Acknowledgment, and Pronoun Mastery
English · WR
G6
eng.g6.f.wr.counterclaim_acknowledgment_refutation
Acknowledge a counterclaim and refute it using the concession-pivot-refutation sequence (CCSS W.7.1.a entry expectation)
Identify a reasonable opposing claim. CONCEDE its merit fairly ('It is true that ___' / 'Some readers might argue ___'). PIVOT ('however / yet / while ___'). REFUTE with evidence and reasoning ('the evidence shows ___' / 'this view overlooks ___'). Avoid the dismissal trap (waving away the counterclaim without engaging it). Apply MG-4 anchor.

Common misconceptions
- DISMISSES the counterclaim instead of engaging it ('Some say uniforms are restrictive. They are wrong.' — no fair statement, no real refutation).
- CONCEDES so completely that the original claim weakens ('Some say uniforms restrict expression. Yes, they do. So we must consider this.' — collapses into agreement instead of refutation).
