Form and use the perfect tenses (MG-15): PAST PERFECT (had walked — completed before another past event), PRESENT PERFECT (have walked — begun in past with present relevance), FUTURE PERFECT (will have walked — completed before a future moment). Use HELPING VERB (had / have / will have) + PAST PARTICIPLE. Choose the right perfect tense for the time relationship the sentence needs.

Common misconceptions
  • Uses simple past where past perfect is needed ('By the time the bell rang, she walked three miles' — should be 'had walked').
  • Confuses past perfect with present perfect — uses 'had' for an ongoing current action ('I had walked to school today' instead of 'I have walked to school today').
