Expand, combine, and reduce sentences for meaning, reader interest, and style (L.5.3.a)
Apply three sentence moves (MG-19): EXPAND a short sentence by adding detail clauses or phrases; COMBINE two short sentences using subordinator or coordinator to produce a more flowing sentence; REDUCE a wordy sentence by cutting redundant words and using stronger verbs. Apply at revision — at least 1 of each move per essay produces stylistic variety (revision move 8 in MG-22).

Common misconceptions
- EXPAND becomes wordiness rather than detail addition (adds filler instead of meaning).
- REDUCE strips meaning along with words (removes the subject or key modifier).
