Apply subject-verb agreement (L.3.1.f) including tricky cases

Match verb form to subject number: singular subject → singular verb form; plural subject → plural verb form. Handle four tricky cases: (1) collective nouns (team, colony, class — usually treat as singular unless the writer means individuals); (2) indefinite pronouns (everyone, somebody, nothing — singular); (3) 'there is / there are' (verb agrees with the noun that follows); (4) subject separated from verb by a phrase ('The queen, surrounded by workers, LAYS eggs.').

Common misconceptions
  • Matches verb to the NEAREST NOUN instead of the subject ('The queen, surrounded by workers, LAY eggs.' — incorrectly matches LAY to workers).
  • Uses 'there are' when the following noun is singular ('There are a queen in the hive.' should be 'There is a queen in the hive.').
