Today we transcribe ONE quote from our interviews. A quote uses the EXACT words of the elder. We put it in quotation marks and we attribute it - we say who said it and when. Cross-link to English G3 Fall: 'When asked about the school, Mrs. Garcia said, "The school used to be one room with a wood stove."' Notice the comma, the open quotation mark, the period inside the close quotation mark.

Key examples

prompt Format this quote: My grandma said the river used to be cleaner.
Checks for understanding

PROTOCOL: some children may have had difficult or unavailable interviews. The alternative protocol applies - historical society archive quote OR published-author quote (e.g., Bolden's Maritcha) honored equally. Quote Cards become portfolio artifacts and feed forward to the lesson 18 capstone.
