Lesson 7 30 min eng.gK.s.lesson_07.diver_ruyj

Diver letters: r, u, y, j

Objectives
  • Students form r, u, y, j.
  • Students recognize that y and j have descenders into the basement.
Vocabulary
descenderbasementtail

Lesson plan

Warm-up

3 min

Air-write h, k, m, n.

Teacher moves
  • Quick

Direct instruction

10 min

Four more diver letters. r: short dive, then a tiny arm sticking out at the top. u: short dive, swing under, dive up. y: short dive, then a basement-descender. j: short dive (with a dot above!), then a basement-descender that curves left.

Key examples
  • Just an arm; don't make it a full hump.
model Short vertical, then tiny arm out at top.
    prompt Form r.
  • y has a tail in the basement.
model Short vertical, swing under and BACK down into the basement.
    prompt Form y.
  • j is i's cousin with a long basement tail.
model Short vertical (with dot above), then curve left into the basement.
    prompt Form j.
Checks for understanding
  • Which letters today have descenders? (y, j)
  • Where does the dot on j go? (in the sky-zone)
  • What's similar about r and n? (both short, but n has a full hump; r just has a tiny arm)

M-K-S-GR-07-A Animation Physical / non-image

25-second animation. r, u, y, j formed in sequence on three-line paper. For y and j, the descender is highlighted in red as it crosses the dirt-line into the labeled 'basement' zone. j's dot is added with a small bouncing animation.

Guided practice

12 min
Tasks
  • Trace and form r, u, y, j each three times.
    scaffold Reference card.
  • Write 'run' (r+u+n).
    scaffold Letter-by-letter.
  • Practice descenders: write y and j with proper basement-descent.
    scaffold Reminder of basement-zone.

Formative assessment

2 min
Exit ticket
  • Form r, u, y, j.
  • Self-check: 'My y and j tails reach into the basement.'
scoring 4/4 with proper descenders = mastery; floating tails = practicing/reteach.

Closure

Moves
  • Chant: 'r-arm, u-swing, y-tail, j-tail!'
  • Preview: tomorrow we meet our first WRITER'S WORKSHOP.

Five letters remain after this lesson (s, v, w, x, z, f). At the current pace, lowercase formation is complete by week 6, leaving 12 weeks for application (writing). This is the right balance.
