Because, But, So — Hochman Sentence Expansion for Opinion

Objectives
  • Students expand a kernel opinion sentence using because, but, and so.
  • Students notice how a because-clause provides a reason and a but-clause introduces a counter-thought.

Lesson plan

Warm-up

5 min

Stick-up share: each child reads the adult-opinion sticky note from last night's homework. Teacher categorizes them on the board: opinions about FOOD, PLACES, BOOKS, PEOPLE, RULES.

Teacher moves
  • Affirm a range of opinion topics
  • Notice if anyone wrote a fact by mistake (gentle redirect)
  • Highlight one strong opinion to use in direct instruction

Direct instruction

15 min

Yesterday we met the opinion paragraph. Today we practice the Hochman expansion: every opinion gets a BECAUSE clause to back it up. Watch: kernel sentence 'Pizza is the best lunch.' Add BECAUSE — 'Pizza is the best lunch because the cheese stretches in long strings.' That because-clause is a REASON. Now add BUT — 'Pizza is the best lunch, but it can be too hot to bite right away.' That but-clause gives a counter-thought. Now add SO — 'Pizza is the best lunch, so I am excited every Friday.' That so-clause shows a result. This term, every opinion sentence you write will have at least one because-clause attached.

Key examples
  • Notice the comma before BUT and SO — but no comma before BECAUSE when it joins one short clause. We'll learn the full comma rules later this term.
model BECAUSE: 'Recess is the best part of the day because I get to run with my friends.' / BUT: 'Recess is the best part of the day, but it is too short.' / SO: 'Recess is the best part of the day, so I save my energy for it.'
prompt Kernel: 'Recess is the best part of the day.' Expand with because, but, and so.
Checks for understanding
  • Which expansion gives a REASON? (because)
  • Which expansion shows a counter-thought? (but)
  • Which expansion shows a result? (so)

Anchor chart: three rows stacked. Row 1 (yellow): 'BECAUSE = reason' with sample 'Pizza is the best because the cheese stretches in long strings.' Row 2 (orange): 'BUT = counter-thought' with sample 'Pizza is the best, but it can be too hot.' Row 3 (purple): 'SO = result' with sample 'Pizza is the best, so I am excited every Friday.' 11x17 print, dyslexic-friendly font, each conjunction underlined in matching color.

Tasks
  • Take the kernel 'My favorite season is ___.' Fill in your favorite, then expand with because, but, and so.
scaffold Sentence-strip template with three labeled rows (BECAUSE / BUT / SO)
  • Trade with a partner. Read each other's because-clause aloud. Is the reason specific enough?

Formative assessment

3 min
Exit ticket
  • Take the kernel 'The best class pet is a ___.' Write one because-expansion and one but-expansion.
scoring Both expansions clear and on-topic = mastery; one = practicing; zero = reteach in small group.

Closure

2 min
Moves
  • Read one expanded sentence aloud to your shoulder partner.
  • Predict: tomorrow we meet Tier-2 Set 6.

Homework

10 min
Tasks
  • Write one expanded sentence for the kernel 'The best snack is ___.' Use a because-clause.

Teacher notes

The because-clause is the single most-used grammatical move in opinion writing. Spend more time on it than on but/so today. Watch for children who give a circular because-clause ('I like it because I like it') — redirect with 'WHAT do you like about it?' This is also a chance to assess Grade-1 Spring compound-sentence retention; if children struggle to attach a clause, schedule small-group review using G1 spring resources.
